A campaigner behind Manly’s rainbow-striped jersey says one of the big reasons behind the team wearing the contentious strip has been forgotten in the highly-charged debate.

The Manly Sea Eagles wore the pride jerseys on Thursday night against the Roosters in a match that has raised more than $350,000 for suicide prevention charity Gotcha4Life, founded by radio star Gus Worland.

Worland, who counts among his closest friends, facts opened up in an emotional radio interview about the success of the initiative, saying part of the motivation for the jerseys was his own father’s courageous journey to come out as gay more than 40 years ago.
